The feeling at their home stadium was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had let in 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Falling Apart?
Was Lazio's season unraveling, or had there never been any cohesion maintaining its structure from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, before he to later acknowledge that the management had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for fiscal problems. Reports that he could resign were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "swindled" him.
Lazio appeared equally disorganized in their performances as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other initial five matches, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it has been hard to ascertain if progress is being made or self-destructing.
Matteo's Unexpected Presence
At least one man continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio this season. He was on last season at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, his parent club were attempting to stay there a while longer. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. They were unable to weaken their team lacking backup options.
He signed in the first place under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."
Discovering His Natural Fit
Perhaps the manager was still trying to work out the exact type of his skill set. Labeled as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
